Semiratruth is constantly in motion. The Brooklyn based, Chicago born electronic artist travels from stage to stage, bouncing between divergent underground music scenes from the US to Guatemala to The Netherlands, synths and sampler in hand like a teleportation device. Onstage they intuitively conduct the energy in the room, seemingly syncing the audience's collective heart rate to a universal metronome. Wielding a table of electronics, they casually tap out sonic portals to another world.
Semira’s constantly shifting environment and their own lived momentum can be heard throughout their new LP S!M arriving September 25th via eclectic Chicago label Sooper Records. S!M strikes a unique balance; the compositional minimalism of Acid, Juke, and Baile funk scutters into industrial soundscapes, only to be brought into the light by exploratory & melodic improvisations reminiscent of 1970s Cosmic Synth and Spiritual Jazz.
The confidence with which Semiratruth harnesses this sonic duality is mirrored in themes throughout their dizzying 22 track instrumental multiverse. Discordant voices of thought and feeling, desire and devotion, questioning and dreaming - all find harmony within Semira’s world, where divergent realities exist at once. Each track is a universe, reveling in an existentialism that's equal parts pleasure and pain, an invocation to ponder the cosmos in a pair of headphones, or channel it on the dancefloor.
Semiratruth’s back catalogue and past live performances have earned a reputation for the artist’s lyrical dexterity, but their passion for instrumental arrangement can be heard throughout all their previous self-produced work. On S!M, Semira simply tilts the spotlight towards the sound designing facets of their artistry. Tracks like “Atitlán”, named after Guatemala’s great lake, demonstrate Semiratruth’s disciplined compositional prowess. Intimate in its microtonality, a slowly mutating synth pad ripples outward as splashes of machine tones melodicly animate life’s ambiguities between notes. That restraint is starkly contrasted by tracks like “Blood Moon Eclipse”, and “we gotta GO!” in which subby kickdrums punt the listener into the rhythm of city life.
S!M was stitched together from a collection of improvisations made primarily on a demo version of FL studios (using no samples) and Arturia’s Microfreak. Pondering the uniquely cosmic results of these musical experiments, Semiratruth explains humbly, “I would just sit down and make noise from how I’m feeling. I’m just naturally a little strange.”
At any given moment, Semiratruth could be anywhere. Wherever Semira is not, their mystery fills the void. Their shadow self stage-dives into a pulsing audience of NYC heads as they shake the speakers with the tap of a finger. At the same minute, their history becomes myth in the Chicago DIY scenes they emerged from. At precisely the same second, farm-core songwriters backstage at a folk festival buzz about their newfound musical obsession, exclaiming, “Semira is the TRUTH!” As Semira puts it, “All of these S!Mulations and timelines are happening S!Multaneously. The deeper you go, the weirder it gets.”
