Chicago’s multi-hyphenate mad scientist Marcus Drake returns to his post-hardore prog
brainchild Anthony Fremont’s Garden Solutions for a blistering new EP Maelström. The eccentric moniker is a reference to infamous scifi monster Anthony Fremont (of Twilight Zone fame), a 6 year old boy with god-like powers who torments the inhabitants of his midwestern hometown.
Marcus’s first release as Anthony Fremont’s Garden Solutions appeared in 2017 with a double cassette anthology titled Anthony Fremont’s Good Life / American Dream. By that time, Drake had been cutting his teeth in Chicago’s DIY rock and experimental scenes for years. After Good Life, Marcus packed up his truck and left Chicago, embarking on a tumultuous odyssey of self discovery which led the artist to a brand new sound, resulting in the creation of his debut LP Save Point 1. The album was a departure from Drake’s hardcore / midwest emo roots, demonstrating a mastery of electronic production and a knack for devilish earworms.
Maelström may feel like a return to form for Marcus, donning the Fremont name again, but in truth it is an amalgamation of the artist’s many journeys. Performed, produced and mixed entirely by Drake, Maelström feels intimate in its singular artistic voice, delivering a manic cacophony of sci-fi lore and socio-political critique. The explosive avant-metal foundation of Anthony Fremont finds the perfect co-conspirator in Marcus Drake’s electronic production prowess, resulting in a 15 minute circus of angular guitars and break-neck drum patterns that melt and crescendo with orchestral precision.
